Jack the Wagtail was borne in 2005 in memory of Jack Dunn, who suffered a burn injury to 90% of his body when a ute exploded whilst he was on a farm undertaking work experience. His parents, Gary and Helen Dunn, established the Jack Dunn Foundation with the support of the then Deputy Glenn Buck at Marmion Primary school who have honoured and remembered Jack ever since.
We were thrilled that Bill Boyan, the new principal of Marmion Primary, has continued the strong relationship with the Foundation under his leadership. With his support and the incredible school community, the Jack the Wagtail Challenge was another great success, with a total of $5617.50 raised to support our research efforts. This year the school oval became a field of obstacles with some new challenges added to keep the students moving; it was fantastic to see everyone get involved! We want to thank the Marmion Primary staff, students and parents for all your continued support in this fundraising initiative – we look forward to next year!
As part of our partnership with Marmion Primary, our PhD researchers Blair and Dinithi visited the year six students to give insight into what it is to be a research assistant at Perth Children’s Hospital and the important role of medical researchers in our health system. Our presentation allowed the students to learn about our current research projects and how science and technology play a crucial role in helping burn patients recover from their injuries. Blair and Dinithi thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were thrilled when a student asked them, ‘how do I become a PhD student like you.’ We wish the year six cohort all the best in their transition to high school, and we hope to have inspired some of the students to explore science and research as their future careers!
