Fiona's End of Year Message

As 2022 draws to a close, I reflect on the 20 years since the window to our world opened due to the Bali bombing. It has been a time to acknowledge and respect the profound loss experienced by so many but also to celebrate the good in those around us. I have been fortunate to work with many people striving to reduce the suffering from burn injuries.

With significant trepidation, I embarked on the project to write what became Under my Skin. I want to thank Sue the author, Di, for keeping me on task, all those who spoke with Sue generously giving their time, and Clare Kuzich who read and reread the text, THANK YOU.

This June it was a great honour for me to accept the Australian Medical Research Society medal for 2022 with the opportunity to share my journey in medical research and highlight the challenges of the future. It was a privilege to speak across the country, culminating in the opportunity to share my passion for research and education at The National Press Club. Robust funding of research at every step of the medical journey is essential if we want patients to benefit from the incredible innovations that Australian researchers and clinicians produce.

The progress over the last 20 years is indeed considered in many areas is in no small part as a result of the support of our community. I look back with pride on the achievements of so many people over the years and I look forward with excitement as we still have a long way to go on the journey to scarless healing inside and out.

My heartfelt thanks to you for continuing to support our mission – together – we will make a difference.
We wish you and yours a wonderful and safe holiday and look forward to 2023.

Yours, Fiona Wood
